Company History

The late Samuel Hekemian, Sr., an enterprising tailor from Armenia who sewed up his first real estate deal in the 1920s, founded Hekemian & Co., Inc.

With an auspicious beginning and tremendous foresight, Mr. Hekemian built the foundation for the firm’s phenomenal growth over the next 70 years.

Today, Hekemian & Co. has evolved into one of the most respected real estate firms in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, with a diverse portfolio of commercial and residential properties. Our history has been marked by several key milestones:

During the 1930s, Hekemian & Co. purchased and managed numerous multi-family apartment and commercial buildings concentrated in Northern New Jersey.

For the period following the close of World War II, Hekemian & Co. embarked on the construction of freestanding supermarkets and new apartment buildings. This trend continued along with the addition of the firms venture into single family subdivision development throughout Bergen County, NJ.

In 1955, Robert Hekemian and his brother Samuel Hekemian, Jr., joined the firm. Fifty years later, Robert, current Chief Executive Officer, continues to lead the firm in its steady and vigorous expansion.

Throughout the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s the firm’s focus evolved around shopping center and apartment acquisitions and development.

In the 1980s, the third generation of Hekemians–sons Robert Jr., Bryan and David–joined the firm.

Today, Hekemian & Co. continues to expand its portfolio of assets and geographic reach into Northern Virginia, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania. The firm's broadened capabilities have enabled Hekemian & Co. to expand its investment and development criteria to include mixed-use, lifestyle and large-scale urban projects.

With a focus on the future, Hekemian & Co. actively pursues opportunities to acquire, develop and enhance new and existing real estate opportunities.
